My efforts to lose weight are going fairly well thus far. Dropping sugar drinks out of my diet has already done wonders, and the added exercise on top of everything else seems to be having a very positive effect. I mentioned in this entry that I was excited about the everyday use of my new Pedometer, but that was before I realized I'd purchased some kind of cheapy, magical Pedometer that only counts steps when it feels like it, and sometimes counts steps that you don't even remember taking.

Based on the results of my third day with the thing, in which I was unable to go to the gym OR take my lunch break walk (because Huong had to work all day, we had pretty limited time in the morning and then I had to return home to let the dogs out when I would normally trot about campus), I realized the thing was crap. I didn't do nearly half the walking I would normally do that day, and yet, according to my magical pedometer, I apparently walked to Egypt, across an ocean, Jesus style.

Maybe that pedometer was just trying to fluff my ego a little bit. "You're a stud," it says to me. "Nobody walks as much as you. Look at this number. Nobody has a number this high. Nobody. You're so in shape, I bet you could walk to the moon."

This is fairly fitting of my vision of the future, where the machines pander to me on a daily basis, including but not limited to the giving of massages, and telling me that my booty is "too fine." Unfortunately, pandering pedometers are utterly useless to me when I desire hard trend data that I can employ to create a reasonable daily cardio routine.

Needless to say, that item has been returned, and now I guess I'm in the market for a new one. But this time I think I should do a little more research. Has anybody else out there gone the pedometer route? Which brands do you use, and why?

Zeebo Out.

Hi Lee, I've been enjoying your video posts thus far - looks like we both started a get-healthy journey around the same time, though I'm just updating once a week on my own progress (isn't it amazing how cutting out the sodas works?? RIP Big Red in my belly)

Anyway, I wanted to tell you about the Garmin GPS pedometer. Since it uses GPS technology it is far more accurate on your actual distance that you've covered. I've been thinking of an upgrade so I've been looking at the Forerunner 305. My aunt also has a Garmin and she likes it a lot.

I tried a regular pedometer but it was a big liar so I threw it away.

The only downside to GPS pedometers is that they are expensive. Garmin's not too bad, but the cheapest is still around $120. Alternately you can swipe a relative's older version for your own whey THEY upgrade, haha.

I used a pedometer I got from the American Cancer Society for several years. It was pretty accurate, even when I wore it at the gym. It costs about $5 and benefits a great cause.
